SOROR SUMAIYAH YATES JOINS GAMMA'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Soror Sumaiyah Yates has an established history of service to Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. She continues her work to build Gamma in a new capacity as a member of the Board of Directors, filling the seat vacated by Soror Christine Ortiz.
Soror Sumaiyah comes to the Board after holding the position of President of Beta Chapter for two terms. She was one of the first seven members of Beta Chapter which was established on July 22, 2006. Under her leadership, the chapter conducted several community outreach activities such as coat drives, halaqahs, school sponsorships, and development of a computer lab for a non-profit organization. In addition, the chapter conducted fundraising activities and recruited and inducted four new members during Soror Sumaiyah's term in office.
In addition to working at the chapter level, Soror Sumaiyah has also worked on several projects conducted by National Headquarters. Soror Sumaiyah has served on GammaFest committees, and she facilitated last year's National Headquarter's live webcast that linked sorors from over the country in a real-time conversation.
President and Executive Director Dr. Althia F. Ali said, "Sumaiyah was a natural selection for Soror Christine's vacated position on the Board. She not only is among the sorors with the longest tenure in the sorority, but she also has grown and developed to the point that she fully understands both chapter and national sorority issues. Sumaiyah is truly a great Gamma resource."
Soror Sumaiyah earned one of the first Six Pillar Awards when she was recognized at GammaFest 2007. This is the highest award that the Sorority presents for excellence and dedicated service to Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc.
