SOROR WAKILAT KASUMU PROGRESSES IN HER STUDIES
If she seems to be on top of the world, it's because Alpha Chapter member Wakilat Kasumu (President) is making steady progress as she pursues her Ph.D. in the neuroscience graduate program on the mechanism of disease track at the University of Texas Southwestern at Dallas. Soror Wakilat has been studying at the University of Texas Southwestern since May 2008 when she graduated from Spelman College.
Her thesis project involves studying the Role of Deranged Calcium Signaling in the Purkinje Cells and
Pathogenesis of Spinocerebellar Ataxia type 2. She is at the end of her second-year, taking the qualifying exam to become a PhD candidate. Soror Wakilat says, "Once I pass this major hurdle, I am more or less guaranteed a PhD so long as I can defend a thesis within the next few years. I hope to graduate in 2012, after which I hope to go to medical school and eventually build a career as a physician-scientist inshaAllah."President and Executive Director Dr. Althia F. Ali said, "We are so proud of Wakilat for what she has accomplished. We send hearty greetings of mabrook (congratulations) to Soror Wakilat, and we continue to wish her well as she pursues her goals, while remaining active in Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. She is an excellent example of how a soror can pursue her goals without giving up on her sorority. She remains in my duahs."
