SOROR KHALEELAH MUHAMMAD CONTINUES HER WORK IN THE GREATER CHICAGO COMMUNITY
Soror Khaleelah Muhammad (President, Delta Chapter) participated in a gun violence rally in conjunction with the Alternative Spring Break of students from Howard University on March 11 as coordinator for her mosque's Justice Ministry. To demonstrate the impact of gun violence on affected communities, Howard students held balloons with the name of one of the many slain Chicago Public School students. The names of each slain student was called out one at a time, then their balloons were popped and the students, in a dramatization, fell lifeless to the ground. When all the students fell the ground in front of the Dirkson Federal Building where the concerned citizens rallied, the ground was covered with the bodies of the stand-ins, profoundly highlighting the magnitude of the issue of gun violence. Soror Khaleelah is a committed advocate in the anti-violence movement and serves on the Advisory Board of the Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Speaker's Bureau of the Illinois Council on Handgun Violence (ICHV). Last month, she served as one the judges for the ICHV's Student Voices Contest, which allows students to express in writing or artistically, their thoughts and feelings on gun violence.
Delta Chapter President Khaleelah Muhammad was recently elected to the board of ABJ Community Services, a prominent Chicago Social Service Agency. She has also been nominated for the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations Emerging Leaders Program and has applied to participate in the One Chicago One Nation Community Ambassadors Program.
Soror Khaleelah has signed on to be one of the Chicago area coordinators of the American Bar Association's Law Day 2010 and has enlisted the aid of Chicago area prospective sorority members. On Law Day, Delta Chapter will be participating in the Know Your Rights Workshop and Legal Resource Fair that Soror Khaleelah initiated for the benefit of the South East Chicago community. During Law Week, Soror Khaleelah has also organized a community forum on Gun Violence at St. Sabina Catholic Church and will be visiting schools in the southeast Chicago community to facilitate dialogue with the high school students of freedom and responsibility.
