Delta Chapter President Spends Time on Membership Development and in Community Service Activities

Membership

Soror Khaleelah (Dionne) Muhammad (Delta Chapter - President), continues to work to build membership in the chapter. On March 2, she met with two Gamma prospects, discussing the history of the sorority, the two-fold sisterhood that it uniquely offers, as well as what is on the horizon for Delta Chapter in its future development this year.

Community Service Work

Soror Khaleelah has continued her active involvement in the violence prevention movement and on March 19, 2009, she hosted a gang and youth violence town hall meeting for the east side community in Chicago.   The town hall brought out over 400 concerned citizens from all over Chicagoland, including community residents, youth, former gang members, churches, mosques and community organizations all committed to work together to end the violence.

To highlight programs available for youth in the community and the necessary involvement of the youth in addressing the problem of violence in the community, the KOG warriors, muslimahs from Muhammad University of Islam, and HipHop Detoxx all performed at the event.

The panel included an alderman who serves as the Chair of the Education Committee for the City of Chicago; a representative of a member of the state Senate; Christian and Muslim faith-community leaders; as well as Spencer Leak, Sr., CEO of the A.R. Leak Funeral Home and Chairman of Black on Black Love; Francis Wright, CEO of Black on Black Love; Phil Jackson, CEO of Black Star Project; and Dr. Larry Muhammad (Soror Khaleelah's husband) who serves as the National Director of Education for the Nation of Islam.

On March 26, 2009, Soror Khaleelah spoke at the Winnie Mandela Charter School about the role of women in rebuilding the communities in which we live and serve.   The presentation was in conjunction of the school's special program in tribute to women.   Khaleelah began her relationship with Mandela Charter School last October when she volunteered to observe and judge a debate panel there and then served as part of a debate panel.   Since that time, she has been lending her time as a debate consultant to the head of the English department who is trying to establish a debate team. Khaleelah volunteers her time coaching two other debate teams in the city and hosted a National Debate Competition on Saturday, February 28, 2009.
