Soror Challenges Board to Make the
Elementary Curriculum More Inclusive
GGChi Co-founder Imani Canty
Vice President and Assistant Director Imani Canty addressed the Guilford County Board of Education at their June 26, 2008, special meeting. The expressed purpose of the special meeting was for the Board to address and present to the community a report on their "Comprehensive Study of Educational Conditions and Academic Performance concerning Male African American Students."
In Soror Imani's speech, she focused on the need for "the cessation of improperly labeling African American males students as 'learning disabled' when the school system gives up helping students to progress academically and the need for an expanded curriculum that promotes a positive historical perspective of African Americans."
Soror Imani says that she credits her experiences in Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. as being instrumental in preparing her to "be able to rise to this occasion through speech writing and public speaking, along with mentoring that she has received from Dr. Ali especially during the time (they) were establishing the sorority."
When asked for comments about her participation in this event Soror Imani stated, “Al'humdulilah, membership in Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority truly has its benefits. I am incredibly happy and thankful for the opportunity to expand as an activist, leader, and spokesperson in my community on the grassroots level. I don't know where this work will lead, but I do know that Allah (SWT) is the best of planners. So I'm excited about the prospects that may be opened to me, insha'Allah.”
The idea for Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. was Soror Imani's. After exploring the possibility of membership in several existing sororities, Soror Imani felt that none of them met her needs as a Muslimah and that joining them would force her to compromise her religious beliefs and practices. After researching several Greek-lettered organizational structures, she developed the framework for GGChi and presented the idea to her mother, Dr. Althia F. Ali, hoping to attract her to the challenge of establishing this, the first Islamic-based sorority.
Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. was founded by the mother-daughter team on April 3, 2005, and was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia on July 21, 2005. The sorority now has six chapters in eight states.
