the Sixth Annual Pioneer Golf TournamentDr. Althia F. Ali participated in the Sixth Annual Pioneer Golf Tournament held June 21-22 at the historic Clearview Golf Course in Canton, Ohio. Clearview was built by William Powell, now 91, a PGA Life Member who remains the only African-American to own, operate and build a golf course in the United States, according to Bob Denney of the Professional Golf Association.
Built in 1946, the golf course is registered as a historical site, having earned a place in the National Register of Historic Places. Called "America's Course," Clearview has been featured in several national media articles and reports.
For her effort over the two days in the tournament, Dr. Ali earned the dubious distinction of having the second highest score on the first day and the highest score on the second day. Taking the ranking in good humor, Dr. Ali said, "I participated in the golf tournament because I wanted to support the efforts of my good friend, Jessie Brooks, who has worked on this project since its beginning. In the past, I wasn't able to attend the tournament; however, I jumped at the chance to do so this year even though I've not played in about three years, and I wasn't consistently good even then. The company was good, and the cause was something that resonated with me, so I'm thrilled to have participated in the tournament nonetheless. It has been my hope to have a group of Gammas participate in the tournament, and I hope that we will be able to do so in the future."
Proceeds from the tournament go to the Clearview Golf Course.
