Co-Founder Imani Canty
Has Two Reasons to RejoiceSoror Receives Her B.S. Degree and A Job Promotion
Soror Imani Canty is methodically ticking off the items on her "to-do" list. While a student in 2005, she took her idea of having an Islamic-based sorority from merely a thought to a reality as a co-founder of Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. On December 12, 2008, she completed the requirements for her B.S. degree in Community Justice Studies with a Dance minor at Guilford College (Greensboro, NC).
Imani studied at Syracuse University, Mankato State University (now called Minnesota State University-Mankato), and United States International University (now called Alliant International University) before deciding to study at Guilford College. At these universities, she explored majors in business and women's studies. Consistently, she maintained her minor in dance because of her love for the art form.
Once she transferred to Guilford College, Imani chose the major of community justice studies. In explaining why she chose this major, Imani said that community justice studies appealed to her because she is interested in community involvement and activism.
Imani attended the college's reception for December graduates with her two sons and her mother, Dr. Althia F. Ali. Imani said that she plans to return in May to participate in the annual Commencement exercises where other members of her family can celebrate her achievement as well.
Soror Imani is taking community service to a new level. Toward the end of her undergraduate studies she began working as a Personal Care Aide (PCA). As a PCA Soror Imani provides spiritual, emotional, professional and reliable personal care to individuals who need help as they go about their daily living activities. She said that she works to increase the overall health and wellness of clients living in the community.
After working within her current agency for little over one month Soror Imani was promoted to the position of Lead Aide. In this job, she is responsible for network marketing, monitoring client satisfaction and supervising the level of care that her agency's PCAs provide for clients in Guilford County. Commenting on her current line of work, Soror Imani stated, "Although I am working in the health care field, I feel as if my degree in community justice is being put to use. Healthcare is a concern in our communities due to the fact that many don't receive the quality of health and wellness care that (they) deserve. I feel that I'm contributing to the betterment of the community by providing quality care to the clients that I serve."
What's next for Soror Imani? As a result of this new experience, Soror Imani says that she has plans for creating her own Home Health Care agency insha'Allah.
