Seven Inducted Into Beta Chapter (...Story continued from previous page)
"The probationary period is a very important phase of our intake process," said Dr. Althia F. Collins, President and Executive Director. "We use the probationary period to determine if there is a fit between the attitudes, skills, and dispositions of our prospective members vis-à-vis the sorority's needs. Ideally, at the end of the probationary process we have a mutual selection that enables us to grow as a sorority and to help our members meet their personal and professional objectives. This process was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to get to know each other better and to bond as sisters in the sorority."
During the probationary period, prospective members enjoyed food, fun, and challenges designed to help them grow personally and as a group. Activities were designed around several themes: "Our twofold sisterhood," "Islamic awareness and involvement," " Educational development," Our ummah" (community), "Physical and mental health," "Social awareness and involvement," "Sisterhood perfected," and "Economic and indigent support."
Highlights of the probationary period were: attending Jummah prayers at three local masajid (mosques); a skating party (a first for several); a tee shirt contest in which the Lilies presented original designs; a weekend visit by some of the sorors from the Alpha Chapter; and the Lavender Luncheon, the Peace Luncheon, during which the Lilies engaged in their first community service activity and were presented to the local community.
