Alpha Chapter Soror Wakilat Kasumu Finalizes Plans to Study for Doctorate in Texas
Soror Wakilat Kasumu
Soror Wakilat Kasumu is bound for Texas as she continues her studies for a PhD in Neuroscience. Beginning in the summer, she will be a doctoral student at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas where she spent last summer working as a research assistant.
In a letter to her sorors letting them know of her plans to relocate, Soror Wakilat said, " I have decided to accept (the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center's) offer of admission as no other offer (that I have received) seems to be better matched for me and my future career. This means that I will be relocating from Atlanta to Texas this summer, maybe as early as May because during my interview back in January I was offered a summer lab rotation in a lab I hope to work in for my dissertation...I really don't want to leave Atlanta/Alpha at this time...It was a tough decision to make but I feel it is best for me at this point in my life to relocate and hope that all my sorors understand that I have ABSOLUTELY no intention of leaving Gamma."
Soror Wakilat is in her second year as President of the Alpha Chapter. After receiving her BS in Biology from Spelman College last May, Soror Wakilat says that she took this past year to get research experience in neuroscience as she worked towards a Master's Degree.
In learning of Soror Wakilat's plans to leave Atlanta, many sorors expressed appreciation for her advance notice and wished her well as she continues her education. They also expressed delight at the possibility of establishing a chapter of GGChi in Dallas.
