ABOUT THE AWARDS DINNER AND THE UMMAH IMAGE AWARDS
The Awards Dinner is an integral part of GammaFest, a weekend of sisterhood and fun for the sorors of Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. The first GammaFest was held in Endicott, Maryland, on April 6-8, 2007.
While the sorority was founded in 2005 by the mother-daughter team of Dr. Althia F. Ali and Imani C. Canty, the continued advancement of the sorority depends on the combined efforts of all members. Indeed, several dedicated members have consistently risen to the challenge of taking the initial idea and continuing to give it shape with their commitments of time, efforts, and financial support. The purpose of the Awards Dinner is to recognize the contributions that such sorors have made to the continued development of the sorority and to inspire others to make contributions as well.
Beginning in 2008, the Awards Dinner includes the Ummah Image Awards. These awards are designed to bring the sorority together with the local communities in which there are Gamma chapters (currently the following metro areas: Atlanta; Washington, DC; Greensboro Triad; Chicago, and Philadelphia).
The purpose of the Ummah Image Awards is to recognize the efforts of local citizens whose works match the sorority's mission of creating a positive image for Muslim women and Islam in general. Recipients of the Ummah Image Award may be either female or male, Muslim or non-Muslim.
